In the late 1940’s River Hill Coal Company began an underground mining operation in the Kylertown area. By the 1950’s the company was involved in surface mining and today has expanded operations into the Madera and LaJose areas as well.
River Hill Coal Company is both family owned and widely recognized as one of the most eco-friendly and safe mining enterprises in the country.
Operations in the late 1980’s primarily produced steam coal. In response to the increased worldwide demand for metallurgical coal the company began to transition into this process in 2005. As a result the company now operates the largest bituminous mid-vol coal mine in north America.
Today River Hill produces 20,000 tons per month of metallurgical coal, which has proven to be some of the strongest quality coking coal in the world. Because of the quality the coal is in high demand within the steel industry and is distributed both domestically and worldwide.
River Hill is the only privately held coal company in the world that actively implements carbon reducing technologies. Due the company’s dedication to the environment, River Hill has drastically improved the area by reclaiming older mining sites. Even more significant work by the company has lead to solutions for environmental problems created during the depression era mining operations.
